Free jazz (or new thing) is an approach to jazz that first developed in the 1950s and 1960s. The music created by the pioneers of free jazz exhibits very diverse characteristics. The movement arose from dissatisfaction with the limitations established by bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz, developed in the 1940s and 1950s.
